The Guji, like all branches of the Oromo nation, are rich with heroes. They have countless sons and daughters who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for Oromia. It is time for Oromo media to break the silence and raise the voices of Guji’s heroes for all to hear.
While the stories of heroes like Haaji Quxxaa Dambii from the Woraana Adda Bilisumaa Oromoo have been told, their narratives are far from complete. Among the Guji, he is celebrated as a steadfast champion who dedicated his entire life to the wilderness, fighting for the oppressed Oromo people.
Similarly, the name Waaqoo Guutuu is revered across Oromia, immortalized by the community he helped establish. Yet, the legacy of Haaji Quxxaa Dambii himself risks being forgotten, his praise-song fading into silence.
Consider the case of Jeneraal Xulaa Duubee, the hero who defeated the Italian colonial force at Xuyyuura. How is it that his name is scarcely spoken? Oromo media has yet to fully amplify the history he forged.
The Oromo people have faced pressure from the Amhara, but the Guji, in particular, were besieged and crushed upon their own land. The courageous Badhaadhaa Galchuu, who rose from his youth to fight for Oromia, was brutally martyred by the Woyyanee and denied the honor he deserved. The valiant Eleshuu Barii, who gave his life solely for Oromia and its people, now has his name eclipsed by the praise of others.
Look at the contrasting fate of Ilaalaa Kaffalaa, an Amhara warlord. His story is treated in some Oromo media as if recounting it is a crime. Meanwhile, Ilaali Kaffalaa, who famously declared he would strike the enemy blind, is exalted and praised among the Guji.
What of Canaa Shaaro and Efreem Addoo, men who lived and died for Oromia, laying the foundation for the Woraana Adda Bilisumaa Oromoo? Why is their struggle left untold?
Boruu Sheekoo is another denied his due, the one who shattered the system of Naafxanya in the Guji wilderness. And Haaji Waaccuu Nageessaa, a wise leader of the Woraana Adda Bilisumaa Oromoo, who struck at the heart of Naafxanya oppression—his profound story is also being erased.
It was the very sons of the Oromo nation, operating under the name of the Woraana Adda Bilisumaa Oromoo, who killed Haaji Waaccuu Nageessaa. His only crime was his integrity; he was targeted not for any wrongdoing, but for his unwavering stance.
